Military Service[edit]

Larry entered the navy during peace time in the 1950s. He was based at Guantanamo Bay and served on the USS Intrepid. Larry recalls the Intrepid cruising up to the Arctic Circle, down to the Panama Canal and back. The Intrepid was decommissioned in 1974 and was moored in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard awaiting scrapping. In 1982 it was re-opened as a museum, docked in the Hudson River near New York City's Times Square.[1]

Larry George Lindstrom, 82 years of age, of rural Elm Creek, Nebraska, passed away on Tuesday, October 8, 2019, at Holdrege Memorial Homes. Larry was born April 12, 1937, in Holdrege, the third child born to George D. and Aline K. (Vaughn) Lindstrom. He attended school at Snowball Dist. #66 for the first eight grades, and then attended Holdrege High School, where he graduated with the class of 1955.

After high school, Larry and a very good friend, Roger Peterson were inducted into the U.S. Navy on February 13, 1956. While in the service, they were assigned to an Aviation Fighter Squadron VF-33. The home base was N.A.S. Oceana, Virginia. His squadron was also assigned to the Air Craft Carrier, U.S.S. Intrepid. Larry was honorably discharged on December 7, 1957, attaining the rank of 3rd Class Ordanceman Plane Captain.

After his military obligation, Larry began farming with his parents.

On November 27, 1960, Larry was united in marriage to his life-long sweetheart, Dorla Dee Roth. Larry liked to say that Dorla was his right arm, clear to his shoulder. To this union two sons were born: Kevin Wade and Nathan Charles. The family of four had much enjoyment working together on the farm. They also made many trips to Idaho to visit Dorla’s sister and brother-in-law: Rita and Harold Carlson. These were special times.

Larry loved farming the land. Even in his later years he was still involved with working the land. The rows had to be straight, weeds sprayed and the grass mowed. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, passing on the love of the outdoors to his sons. Larry also enjoyed photography, and the many softball games he pitched.

He was involved in the community by serving on the R-4 School Board; Holdrege CO-OP Equity Board; Dist. #6 Rural Fire Board; Phelps County Extension Board; Phelps County 4-H Council; Phelps County Fair Board; the Nebraska Prairie Museum Board; was a member of the Nebraska Rural Radio Association; and was named Outstanding Young Farmer/Rancher in 1971.

Larry was very active in the Holcomb Evangelical Free Church serving as: Chairman; Secretary; Deacon; and Sunday School Superintendent. He enjoyed singing in the church choir for many years. The time and service he gave to the church and to his Lord was his greatest and most valued treasure in life. His favorite Bible verse was Romans 8:28.

Besides his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley who died in infancy; and a brother-in-law, Paul Roth.

Larry is survived by his wife of almost 59 years, Dorla Lindstrom of rural Elm Creek; two sons: Wade Lindstrom and his wife, Terri of McHenry, Illinois; Nathan Lindstrom and his wife, Jeanette of rural Elm Creek: six grandchildren: Brittany Lindstrom; Melanie Ullrich; Erin Lindstrom; Becky Lindstrom; Malina Lindstrom; and Cooper Lindstrom; his brother, Dean Lindstrom and his wife, Jan of Kearney, Nebraska; sisters-in-law: Rita Carlson and her husband, Harold of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Carol Roth of Kearney; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many, many friends.

Visitation will be held on Friday, October 11, 2019, from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Larry’s honor, and kindly suggested to: Holcomb Evangelical Free Church; the Nebraska Prairie Museum; or donor’s choice.
