As a boy, Hugh worked for his uncle Les on the family farm in Shelby, Iowa. Hugh rode the train from his home in Gilmore City, Iowa, south to Shelby, Iowa. The train tracks cut through the Linn farm. Normally the train didn't stop until Council Bluffs, but the conductors sometimes made an exception for the young Linn boy, depositing him directly on the farm. With an obvious fondness for the past, Hugh tells stories of gathering chicken eggs without looking and pulling up a bull snake, driving a tractor into a fence, and coon hunting and the booty he acquired from trading in the skins.

Following the path of his father and uncle, Hugh was a champion wrestler and attended Iowa State College on varsity scholarship. While Hugh was living at Iowa State in Ames, Iowa, his uncle Harry was an important state politician just south in Des Moines, Iowa. Hugh tells of going to Des Moines, often by hitch-hiking, and having breakfast in his uncle's home while the Governor of Iowa and other important people would visit. Uncle Harry was an influential figure in the life of Hugh and Hugh's brother Harry Lee. Uncle Harry imparted on each of these boys a love for mischievousness and political conservatism.

Today, Hugh and Joanne are avid sailors of the San Francisco Bay. They own a 1976 27 ft. Ericson, the Bonnie Breeze, which they have sailed in numerous races on the San Francisco Bay.[1] Hugh also owns a late 1983 Honda Seca 650. Hugh and his brother Harry have enjoyed several long rides together, including the Natchez Trace through Mississippi and the Blue Ridge Parkway through the Appalachian Mountains.

Hugh is also an avid photographer, with a dark room in his basement and hundreds of cameras peppered throughout his home. Several of his photos have been published and his work is regularly shown at local art fairs.

True to his Scotch-Irish heritage, Hugh's best friend is a Cairn Terrier named Mac.
