Contribution to the Creation of the Cushing Cemetery[edit]

Georg Carl contributed land to the Cushing Cemetery. The April 27, 1911 edition of the Correctionville News writes:

A suitable location for Cushing's new cemetery has at last been found. Last year the town council undertook the establishment of a burying ground and decided on a plot of ground on the Organ farm. Chas. Baldwin, the present owner, however, strenuously objected, and the deal fell through. For several years, our German citizens have been agitating a movement of this kind and finally took it into their own hands to provide Cushing with a suitable resting place for the dead. A number of influential members of the Lutheran church met here Saturday and selected a two-acre tract on the Volkert farm adjoining the Stewart place, three-fourth of a mile west of the Lutheran church on the Correctionville road. The owner, Carl Volkert, has already given his consent to deed the ground for consideration of $650.[8]

Volkert and Hoppe Relations[edit]

Two of the Volkert children married Hoppes. Rosa Volkert married Henry Hoppe and Bertha Sophia Volkert married Fred Wilhelm Hoppe.

Historical Records[edit]

  • Georg was born on April 6, 1855 and baptized two days later in "Evangelische Kirche Neunkirchen (OA. Mergentheim)"[9]
  • Georg and Margeretha's marriage in 1882 is recorded in the records of Immanuel Lutheran Church, in Compton, Illinois (50 miles south of Rockford)[10]
  • Georg Carl appears in the 1900 Iowa Census in Battle Township, Ida County
  • Sioux Valley News, October 10, 1907, writes, "Daniel Dragoo sold his farm west of [Cushing] town to Carl Volkert of Lee Center, Ill., for $105 per acre. The purchaser is a nephew of Carl , George and Andrew Volkert, prominent german farmers of this locality."
  • Carl (age 53) and Barbara (age 50) live with children Rosa A (age 19), Bertha S (age 16), Freda M (age 14), and William C (age 12) in Battle, Ida County, Iowa in the 1910 Federal Census. Georg is listed as a farmer, living on a farm he owns; the others in the household are not employed.
  • Correctionville News, August, 8, 1912, writes that Carl is a founding board member of the Cushing Realty and Improvement Company
  • The Correctionville Argus, March 7, 1913 writes, "Carl Volkert of Pam Pam, Ill., is visiting his numerous relatives in this locality before continuing his journey to Draper, Lyman County, S. D., where he owns a farm which he will work this season."
  • Karl (age 59) is listed as living in Battle township, Ida county, Iowa in the 1915 Iowa Census. His 1914 earnings were $1,540, and his farm was valued at $32,280, with an encumbrance (a mortgage?) of $9,000 against it.
  • Karl (age 64) and Barbara (age 60) and son William (age 21) are living in Battle township, Woodbury County, Iowa in the 1920 Federal Census
  • Carl (age 74) and Barbara (age 71) are living in Rock township, Woodbury County, Iowa, in the 1930 Federal Census. Anna Volkert (age 67) is listed next on the census form, so presumably she was living nearby.

Notes[edit]
