    • Mrs. Jonas Anderson died last Saturday from the effects of lung fever coupled with the frailties of old, at the ripe age of 77 years, 11 months and 15 days. The funeral services were held Monday afternoon in the Swedish Lutheran church, conducted by Rev. G.S. Larson.
    • She was born in Sweden and came to this country in 1868, and came to Phelps County in 1885, and lived here ever since that time, on a farm near town. She leaves to mourn her death a husband, two sons, one daughter and thirteen grandchildren. She died at the home of A.M. Anderson, three miles northeast of town.
  • From a note to Keith Anderson from Henry Renshult, Bergsgatan 19, 576 00 SAVSJO, Sweden: Hattut torp lies very high. You can see forests, lakes and farms almost 40-50 miles from there. The soil is fine, but it is an enormously stony area. On Hattut the torpare had 3-4 cows, a pig, sheep and hens. The house is now destroyed, but I remember it. It was situated on a slope, had a stone base to the west which was 3 yards high. It was made of logs, covered with boards and painted red. On the first floor there was a room and kitchen, on the second floor one room and loft. The barn was a low, long house, straw-covered. It was painted red too. In the garden were so many, many flowers. There were apple-trees and cherry-trees, currant bushes, gooseberry bushes. Still there are so many flowers, though the forest grows in the garden. Torparen on Hattut normally worked as lumberjack in the large forests on the farm Virestorp. Close to Hattut was an old way from the forest in the area to Hook iron works, on which charcoal was transported to Hook. Before Jonas Peter lived on Hattut the torpare there jobbed with charcoal burning. Stavudden torp was on a cape in a bog. There was not so good soil but no stones. A problem was that the crop often was damaged by frost. The torpare on Stavudden cultivated his potatoes on the hill in another farm. They had 3 or 4 cows. The torp Fällen and Planen are larger torp with 4-5 cows and larger houses. They still remain. Fällen is now an ordinary farm. Planen is a summerhouse for a family. [The pattern of emigration shown here] is the normal model. Save money, send over a child to North America, come after with the family.
