Obituary[7][edit]

Obituary, Akron News-Reporter, May 8, 1969

Funeral Services for Ira C. Vaughn were conducted from Yeamans and Gordon Funeral Home Saturday, May 3. Interment was in Akron Cemetery. Ira Clarence Vaughn, second oldest son of A.J. and Matilda Vaughn, was born Feb. 29 (sic), 1882, at Loomis, NE. On Oct. 25, 1906, he married Selma Penora Lundberg, and to this union five children were born. He spent his childhood in Phelps County NE. In 1934, he and his family moved to Washington County. They lived south of Platner until 1952 when they moved to Akron where he was residing at the time of his death. He was a farmer all of his life, and following his retirement from the farm he grew a garden where he loved to work every day. He died at the Akron hospital on Thursday, May 1, after having been admitted on April 25. He was preceded in death by his son Francis in July 1953, and by his wife in Sept. 1962, by a sister Alice and two brothers, Fred and Oscar. He is survived by three sons Russell of Akron, Harold of Victor MT, and Roy of Anton and a daughter Fern Parker of Longmont; five brothers, Edward, Carroll and Alvin of Holdrege, NE and Ernest and Togue of Loomis, NE.

Other notes: Ira was stern when it came to raising his children. He enjoyed life, but wanted the rules kept, according to Alice Vaughn (daughter-in-law). He walked with a slight limp caused by a broken hip as a young man. He had a full head of gray hear with green eyes. His occupation was farming. He helped train race horses with his father A.J. Vaughn and Ira raced them in sulkee races. The farm was located 7 miles south, 1 east of Platner. He grew wheat and raised livestock (milk cows, Duroc hogs). Roy's children looked forward to his visits to their farm east of Anton because he'd always remember to bring a candy!
