Samuel was a Civil War veteran. He enlisted on Aug 4, 1864 at Nashville, TN; served as a private in CO A 9th Cavalry (Pennsylvania) UNION; and was discharged May 29, 1865 [5],[6].
Historical Records
- Samuel is among Nancy's and James's family, listed in the 1840 Pennsylvania census, in Springfield, Huntingdon County.
- Samuel is living with brother John and his family, mother Nancy, and others in Springfield (post office: Maddensville), Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, in the 1870 Federal Census
- Samuel and brother Jacob are listed in the Shelby County Iowa 1892 Farmers Directory (p. 4)[7]
- A 1911 Atlas of Shelby Township shows Samuel's plot of land
