According to granddaughter Peggy Jeanette Schneider, "My dad was William Antone Schneider, my paternal grandfather was John E. Schneider and was born in Cologne, Germany. Came to the US when he was about 16 and as far as I know they came thru Ellis Island."[4]

Immigration[edit]

Possible match for John E Schneider, who came from Germany to the US at age 16:

Spouse(s)[edit]

The three census records (1910, 1920, 1920) including John Schneider and the children each give a different name for his wife.

The earliest (1910) record lists his wife as Ellen. In the "Texas Marriages, 1837-1973" records, there is a record of a marriage between John Schneider and Ellen King in Collin County Texas on March 12, 1902. This record is in the same county as the 1910 census, and is 2 years prior to the birth of John's oldest known child, Katie/Katy. That makes it highly likely that this is the same Ellen.

The question is who the other two names (Jenny, Etta) refer to. All have different places of birth (and have parents with different places of birth), which suggests they are different women; however, the two 1920 census records are only 2-3 weeks apart and John is listed as married to the woman in each record. That would suggest the opposite--namely that Jenny and Etta are the same person.

Historical Records[edit]

  • The 1910 Federal Census shows the family in Collin County, Texas:
    • Father: John (c. 1869) in Germany, both parents born in Germany, immigrated in 1887
    • Mother: Ellen (c. 1880), in Arkansas, both parents born in Tennessee
    • Children: Katy (c. 1904), William (c. 1907), John Jr. (c. 1909)
  • In the 1920 Federal Census (Jan 13-14, 1920), William is in Greeley County, Oklahoma, as part of this household:
    • Father: John Schneider, born c. 1869 in Germany, both parents born in Germany, immigrated 1881, naturalized in 1885. He is listed as a butcher.
    • Mother: Jenny Schneider, born c. 1870 in Alabama, father born in Alabama, mother born in Tennessee
    • Children: Katie (c. 1905), William (c. 1907), John Jr. (c. 1910), Ellen (c. 1912). All born in Texas
  • Also in the 1920 Federal Census (2-3 weeks later on Feb 2, 1920), in a different township in Oklahoma
    • Same father. In this census, John appears to be a laborer at a packing house (probably consistent with him having been a butcher before)
    • Same children
    • Wife/mother named Etta, from Germany
