The Clan Linn in the Twentieth Century Entry
Hugh Alva Linn was born 11 November 1906. Entering Iowa State College at Ames[, Iowa] in the fall of 1926, he wrestled on the Iowa State Varsity and was elected team captain in his senior year. Hugh won the Midwestern A.A.U wrestling championship twice, was undefeated in conference competition, and winner of the National Collegiate Championship at 135 pounds in 1930, his senior year. He also won the Iowa State trophy for the most team points won during his senior year, the Big Six trophy for the most points scored by any wrestler in the Big Six Conference during his senior year, and was elected to the Iowa State College Athletics Hall of Fame. In 1932 Hugh won the Olympic tryouts, but was unable to represent the U.S. because of business conflicts. He graduated from Iowa State College in Veterinary Medicine, spent one year on the faculty of Iowa State, then located at Gilmore City in general practice. Hugh married Edith Lucille Nelson in 1932. Hugh was president of the North Central Veterinary Medicine Association and served many years on the Gilmore City school board. He was a 4-H leader for fifteen years, a member of Sigma Pi social fraternity, past master of the Masonic Lodge, and past patron of the Eastern Star. Hugh died on 26 June 1971. Hugh and Edith had five sons.[4]
