Jill Lindstrom's Memory of the Hoppe's

I do remember my Grandma and Grandpa Hoppe very well. They were both alive until I was in Jr. High (grandpa died) and High School (Grandma died) ( or around then). The were a big part of my life. Went there for most holidays (except for Memorial Day was ALWAYS the Linn side) and they came to see us quite often too. I went to stay a week every summer with them in Correctionville and loved it. (Caught frogs, played with the chickens, picked raspberries, stayed int their upstairs....and played with my cousin, Jane.) It was great fun! My Grandma was a wonderful seamstress and she helped sew a couple of dresses for Homecoming and proms. My Grandpa was quite a teaser.....always teasing and playing with us kids. They always went to Phoenix, Az every winter because my Grandpa had bad emphysema.

Marriage Announcement

Mr. Fred William Hoppe and Miss Bertha Sophia Volkert were married Wednesday noon at the home of the bride's parents, Mr and Mrs Karl Volkert in Battle township. Henry Hoppe and Miss Rosa Hoppe attended the young couple, while Dorothy Benedict and Helen Kurtz were the flower girls. Rev. Langkammerer performed the ceremony.

A splendid wedding dinner was served at one o'clock, only near relatives being present.

The young couple will start housekeeping the first of March and will occupy George Volkert's farm four and a half miles northwest of Cushing.

Best wishes for happiness in their life are extended to the young people.

• The Correctionville News, July 23, 1914, writes "Fred and Henry Hoppe shipped a carload of fine hogs to Sioux City Monday. They accompanied the shipment."

• In 1933: "Fred Hoppe was seriously injured on Thursday while helping to pick up hay at the John Fletcher home, north of town. One of the teams ran away. Fred was knocked down, one of the horses stepping on his arm and a wagon wheel passing over his head. Mr. Hoppe saw the team coming and stepped out to try to stop them. It was then that he was struck and injured. He was immediately brought to Hamburg for Medical Jobs Australia attention and the doctors found it necessary to take ten stitches to close the wound in his head. At the time the Reporter went to press the injured man was getting along nicely"
• The Ida County Pioneer Record, October 27, 1955, writes, "Mr and Mrs John Volkert, together with Mr and Mrs Fred Hoppe of Correctionville, went to Denver, Thursday. Mr. Hoppe was the delegate from the Brotherhood of St. John Lutheran church, to the national convention of the American Lutheran Brotherhood, which was held in Denver from Friday noon through Saturday."
• The Ida County Pioneer Record, October 24, 1957, writes, "Mr and Mrs Fred Hoppe of Correctionville, Mrs Rose Hoppe, Mr and Mrs Wm. Volkert, Sr., and Mrs Kate Kurtz and Helen went to Spirit Lake Monday, spending the day with Dr and Mrs walter Meier an helping them close their cottage fro the summer."
• The Ida County Pioneer Record, November 28, 1957, writes, "Mr and Mrs Wm. Volkert, Sr., entertained at dinner Sunday for their 35th wedding anniversary. The guests were Mr and Mrs D. B. Severson of Sioux City, Mr and Mrs Fred Hoppe of Correctionville, Mr and Mrs Frank Volkert of Holstein, Mrs Kate Kurtz, Mrs Rose Hoppe, Jim Stanton, and Mr and Mrs Wm. Volkert Jr. and family."
• The Ida County Pioneer Record, May 15, 1958, writes, "Mrs Rose Hoppe, Mrs Kate Kurtz and Helen and Mr and Mrs Lester Baker and family were Sunday dinner guests of Mr and Mrs Fred Hoppe at Correctionville."
