Immigration[edit]

One account of Andreas's immigration[6] says:

Due to the death of his father when he was very young he was compelled to make his way in the world as soon as he completed his schooling. He worked near Neckaran on the banks of the Rhine. He also work as a mason. He emigrated to America in 1879 and settled at PawPaw, Illinois with his sister, Rosina & her family.


Passenger lists (See "Historical Records" section, below) from both Hamburg and New York confirm the 1879 date.

1856 Andreas was born, in Althausen, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany
1879 Emigrated to US, settling in Paw Paw Illinois, with sister Rosina and her family.[7]
1880 According to the 1880 Census, Andrea was in Wyoming, Lee, Illinois, working on farm for George Pope family - indexed as "Andrus".[8]
1881 Andreas and Christina Groh were married in Paw Paw, Illinois[9]
1882 - 1894 Andreas and Christina had eight children in Paw Paw[10]
c. 1894-1898 Andreas and Christina moved to Ida, Iowa[11]
1898 - 1900 Andreas and Christina's ninth and tenth children were born, in Ida, Iowa[12]
1910 Andreas died in Douglas Township, Ida County, IA[13]
1935 Christina died in Holstein, IA[14]
