The timing of his life is unclear. Two sources disagree as to whether he was in Baltimore in the 1770s:
- Humphrey is listed in "Proceedings and Acts of the General Assembly, 1766-1768"[8]
- "Humphrey moved to Huntingdon Co., around 1761-75.[9]"
- Humphrey was appointed as an offer of the militia in Baltimore County (2nd lieutenant) in 1777[10]
By 1790, multiple sources agree that Humphrey was in Pennsylvania:
- Humphrey is counted in the 1790 Huntingdon, PA census (as "Humphry Chilcot")[11]
- Humphrey and John (son?) are listed as having been granted 400 acres of Huntindon County land on Jan. 19, 1793.[12]
