Roy and Linda Linn's research[edit]

  • Born in Columbiana, Ohio
  • Quaker Records indicate that Hannah was "marrying contrary to discipline"
  • Our original family records from Robert Simon indicated that William Woodruff married Hannah Steel, but after finding several sources on Ancestry.com that listed Hannah Morris as his wife, I did some investigating and have comncluded that Hanna Morris is probably correct. John and Catharine (Fetrow) Steel did not have a daughter Hannah, but their son, John W. did marry Jane Morris, Hannah's sister in Ohio.
  • Hannah and William were married in Ohio (contrary to Quaker discipline) and according to the 1850 census lived there with one child, Mary.
  • Census 1850: Hanna Mahoning Co. Ohio w/ Wm & Mary
  • In the 1860 census they lived in Johnson Co. Iowa with Mary, Leonora, Warren W., Sarah E., Comley, and John W. John W. Steel, son of a neighbor lived with them and is listed as a farm laborer.Hannah died in 1862.
  • In the 1870 census, William was living in Johnson Co. Iowa with Huldah (second wife) and Warren W. Two of his children, John and Leonora were living nearby with John W. Steel and his wife Jane, who was Hannah Morris's sister--aunt of the children. Apparently John W. and Jane had no children of their own. In 1880 William lived with his daughter Leonora (Nora) and her husband Joseph Luckey and family in Washington Co. Iowa although Huldah was still alive.

Historical Records[edit]

  • Hannah lives with William (with child Mary) in Berlin, Mahoning County, Ohio in the 1850 Federal Census
  • Hannah lives with William in Freemont, Johnson County, Iowa in the 1860 Federal Census
