Overview[edit]
Ethel was born February 25, 1908, in Putnam County, Tennessee. She was the oldest child of William Chester Henry and Crissey Roberson. When Ethel was around 3, her family moved from Tennessee to Oklahoma. By 1920, they were living in Pontotoc, Chickasaw County, Oklahoma.
Between 1920 and 1930, it appears that Ethel's parents separated and the family scattered. In 1930, her father Chester (age 45) had moved from Oklahoma back to his parents' home in Tennessee, where he would die 4 years later[8]. Ethel (age 21) was, by 1930, married to William Schneider (age 23). They lived in Bristow, Creek County, Oklahoma, and had one son, Eugene (age 4). With them lived two of Ethel's younger siblings, Dorothy Henry (age 16) and Haskell Henry (age 17). Carol did not live with them, and may have been married and living with his own family by this point[9].
It is possible that immediately after the 1930 census Ethel and William moved to Lawrence, Kansas, because unverified sources claim that the couple's second child, Peggy Jeanette Schneider, was born April 26, 1930 in Lawrence, Kansas.
Sometime in the 1930s or 1940s, William and Ethel moved the family to Texas. At some point during that time frame, William and Ethel had a third son, William Jr. In 1945, the couple, living in Houston, gave birth to a stillborn daughter. In 1948, the couple, living in Gregg County (2 hours east of Dallas), had their last child, Betty Grace Schneider.
Still in Texas, in January 1961, William died, at 54 years old.
Ethel died at age 74 on June 8, 1982 from complications during quadruple heart bypass surgery. She is buried in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings, Nebraska.
Religion[edit]
Peggy Jeanette Schneider's page suggests she inherited the Mormon faith from her family. It is unclear whether that means the Henrys were Mormon, or the Schneiders were Mormon, or whether Ethel and William adopted it during adulthood.
Historical Records[edit]
- Nora is in William's and Crysie's household in the 1910 Tennessee census, in Putnam County, Tennessee. Mother Crysie is listed as born in Texas, and both maternal grandparents are listed as being born in Tennessee. Father William C is listed as born in Tennessee, along with both paternal grandparents. William Jr is an infant (< 1 year old). William Sr. is listed as a farmer and owns his home.
- Ethel is in Chester's household in the 1920 Oklahoma census, in Pontotoc, Chickasaw County.
- Ethel (age 21) is living with her husband William (age 23), their son Eugene (age 4), and her siblings Dorothy Henry (age 16) and Haskell Henry (age 17) in Bristow, Creek County, Oklahoma, in the 1930 Federal Census. She is listed as having been born in Tennessee, as are both of her parents. Eugene is listed as having been born in Oklahoma. Dorothy and Haskell are listed as having been born in Oklahoma too. Ethel is listed as "Ethel H Snyder" (presumably she took Henry as her middle name after marrying).
- Ethel (age 32) is living with her husband William (age 33) and children Eugene (14), Peggy (10), and William (7) in Gregg, Texas in the 1940 Federal Census. This census indicates the family lived in the same home in 1935.
- On July 1, 1945, William and Nora lost an infant girl (no first name; age given as "1 day"; presumably a stillborn) in Pasadena, Harris County, Texas (suburb of Houston). The child is buried in "So. Park" Cemetery in Houston.
- In 1948, daughter Betty Grace was born
