Early life[edit]
Reuben was born in 1878[8] in the town of Sivenzian in the Russian Empire. His parents were Nathan Rabinovich and Esther Schulman. (Note: Family oral tradition has it that Reuben and his brothers were born in Azerbaijan. Reuben's brother Eli's naturalization papers show he was born in "Sivenzian", which appears to be a match for Švenčionys (spelled Sventzion in Yiddish) in Lithuania.)
In the 1890s[9], Nathan moved to Vilnius, in present day Lithuania, for rabbinical studies. The exact timing and circumstances are fuzzy. According to one account, "Father Nathan sent Reuben to Vilna (present day Vilnius, Lithuania) for rabbinical studies as this was the cultural center of eastern Europe. Apparently Eli and another brother Moishe ended up there. It is not known if Nathan (a rabbi) ever resided there."[10] Alternatively, "Reuben and brother Eli came to Vilna from Baku around 1895 (and maybe others including his widowed mother)."[11]
Life in Vilna[edit]
In the span of several years, Reuben moved to Vilna, Nathan died, Reuben's mother and siblings joined him in Vilna (either coming with Reuben or following him soon thereafter), and Esther remaried Yehiel Beinush HaCohen, a rabbi from in or near Vilna. Yehiel had several children of his own, including Sarah Myrtle Caplan.
Some family stories suggest that Sarah and Reuben were forced to marry, even though Sarah had a boyfriend at the time. Sarah was extremely unhappy about this. Reuben and Sarah married in Vilna in 1898. A year later, in 1899, they had their first child, Nathan (Nussan).[12] According to Nancy, "One thing we know is that Reuben’s father was also named Nathan (Nussan). In Ashkenazi Jewish tradition, of course, children are named in honor of a dead relative. So certainly Reuben’s (natural) father was dead by then. Likewise, Reuben and Sarah's third child, Esther, was born in 1907; we can assume this means Reuben's mother, Esther, was the child's namesake and was dead by 1907.
Life in The United States[edit]
In 1905[13], Reuben immigrated to the US, without his wife or children. He arrived at the port of New York March 13, 1905.[14] The ship's manifest lists him as 26 years old; a painter; Russian; Jewish; from Baku; and he lists a friend named Phil B. Kaplan, at 139 E. Houston St. in New York, NY. (Phil could have been a brother of Reubin's wife Sarah, whose maiden name was Caplan)
A year later, Sarah and their children immigrated. By 1910, we find Reuben and Sarah, in their early thirties, living in Chicago with their children. Reuben was a plumber.
By 1920, Reuben (age 40) and Sarah (age 43) live in Chicago with their children Nathan (age 21), Rose (age 14), Esther (age 12), Hyman (age 10), Bertha (age 8), Ben (age 5), Sam (age 3), and Alexander (age 4 months)[15].
After raising eight kids together, Sarah and Reuben separated. Sarah's two daughters (Rose and Esther, neither of whom ever married) took Sarah to Washington, D.C., with them when they went there to find work. (Esther became extremely paranoid and had many cats.)
