This person was erroneously believed, by Jim Lindstrom, to be August J. Vaughn's father. Further research by Randy Lindstrom proved otherwise. I have de-linked the two individuals, but left this page standing.
Overview[edit]
After immigrating to the United States in 1868, John and his family settled in Geneseo, IL.
John is listed as a day laborer in the 1870 census, 18 months after his arrival in the U.S. His son August is also listed as a day laborer, and we know from other sources that August was working on farms. It is possible that John was doing the same.
Thirty years later, John is listed in the 1900 census still in Geneseo. He is 81, listed without occupation, and living with his son Charles. The census says that Charles lives in town (versus a farm) and owns his house outright (versus having a mortgage).
Immigration[edit]
There is an incomplete record (no age) of a "Joh Johanson" aboard the City of London, which arrived 3 Aug 1868.[7] It is impossible to tell whether this is a match, but it seems unlikely, as this particular passenger list includes more than just the adult males, and doesn't show Johanna or August.
Historical Records[edit]
- John G (age 53, day laborer), wife Johanna (age 31, keeps home), son August (age 16, day laborer), and daughter Eda M (age 1, born in Illinois) live in Geneseo, Henry, IL in the 1870 Census.
- The 1877 book The History of Henry County, Illinois (p201) lists August, Charles, and John, but has enough other Johsons that it's difficult to know if these are matches.
- The 1880 Census for Geneseo, IL includes John Johnson (age 62; laborer), Hannah (age 50; wife), Charles (age 34; laborer), Ida (age 10; daughter), and Emmanuel (age 6; son). Charles was born in Sweden. Ida and Emmanuel were born in Illinois.
- In the 1900 Census for Geneseo, IL, John G (age 81) and Johanna (age 70) are living at son Charles A's (age 45, single) home, along with younger son Emmanuel (age 25, single). John and Johanna have been married 48 years (since c. 1852). John G is still an alien, but Charles is a naturalized citizen. Johanna is listed has having had 6 children, but only 3 remain living. We know August was living, and this census shows Charles and Emmanuel were living, so Ida must have died, along with 2 other unknown children.
- There is a "John Gustaf Johnson," died Jan 31, 1903 buried in Oakwood Cemetery--the same cemetery in which son Charles is buried. According to this transcription of the gravestone information, the buried individual died at age 84. That matches up with John's birth year from previous censuses. John and Charles are buried near in the same area. As are Johanna M Johnson (died 11/24/1912 at age 83) and Emanuel Johnson (died 4/5/1954 at age 79)[8]
