Overview

William Antone Schneider was born in McKinney, Texas (just north of Dallas) between 1906 and 1908. His father, John E. Schneider was born in Germany, but had been in the US for about 20 years. It is uncertain who his mother was, as census records from 1910 and 1920 give several different possibilities. William had an older sister, Katie, and two younger siblings, John Jr. and Ellen.

The family moved from Texas sometime between 1912, when William's youngest sister Ellen was born (in Texas), and 1920, when the census shows the family living in Oklahoma. Interestingly, the family shows up twice in 1920 census. On January 13th and 14th, 1920, the family lived in Greeley Township, Oklahoma (just south of Oklahoma City). 2-3 weeks later, on February 2, the family lived in Oklahoma City proper.

Sometime between 1920 and 1930, William married Nora Ethel Henry (who became known then as either Ethel Henry Scheneider or Nora Henry Schneider) and the couple had their first child, Eugene. Also between 1920 and 1930, Ethel's mother, Crissey Roberson, died, and her father, William Chester Henry, moved back to Tennessee, leaving Ethel to take care of her teenage siblings Haskell and Dorothy. In 1930, the William and Ethel, their son Eugene, and Ethel's two siblings Haskell and Dorothy were living in Bristow, Oklahoma--a rural area situated between Tulsa and Oklahoma City.

It is possible that immediately after the 1930 census the family moved to Lawrence, Kansas, because unverified sources claim that the couple's second child, Peggy Jeanette Schneider, was born April 26, 1930 in Lawrence, Kansas.

Sometime in the 1930s or 1940s, William and Ethel moved the family to Texas. At some point during that time frame, William and Ethel had a third son, William Jr. In 1945, the couple, living in Houston, gave birth to a stillborn daughter. In 1948, the couple, living in Gregg County (2 hours east of Dallas), had their last child, Betty Grace Schneider.

Still in Texas, in January 1961, William died, at 54 years old.

Occupation

Both 1920 Census records indicate William's father was a butcher. In 1930, William, too, was listed as a butcher.

Religion

Peggy Jeanette Schneider's page suggests she inherited the Mormon faith from her family. It is unclear whether that means the Henrys were Mormom, or the Scheneiders, or whether Ethel and William adopted it during adulthood.

• In the 1920 Federal Census (Jan 13-14, 1920), William is in Greeley Township, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma (just south of Oklahoma City), as part of this household:
  • Father: John Schneider, born c. 1869 in Germany, both parents born in Germany, immigrated 1881, naturalized in 1885
  • Mother: Jenny Schneider, born c. 1870 in Alabama, father born in Alabama, mother born in Tennessee
  • Children: Katie (c. 1905), William (c. 1907), John Jr. (c. 1910), Ellen (c. 1912). All born in Texas

• Also in the 1920 Federal Census (2-3 weeks later on Feb 2, 1920) the same father and children, but a wife/mother named Etta, who is from Germany are living in Oklahoma City
  • Who are the moms/wives? Etta, Ellen, Jenny?
• William (age 23) is living with wife Ethel (age 21), their son Eugene (age 4), and her siblings Dorothy Henry (age 16) and Haskell Henry (age 17) in Bristow, Creek County, Oklahoma, in the 1930 Federal Census.
  • William is listed as having been born in Texas, with a German father and a Texan mother. He is a butcher at a meat market.
  • Ethel is listed as having been born in Tennessee, as with her parents. She does not have an occupation.
  • They're renting their home, for $10.50/month.
  • At their date of marriage, William was 17 years old and Ethel was 15. That would mean they were married 6 years earlier, in about 1924.
• On July 1, 1945, William and Nora lost an infant girl (no first name; age given as "1 day"; presumably a stillborn) in Pasadena, Harris County, Texas (suburb of Houston). The child is buried in "So. Park" Cemetery in Houston.
• In 1948, daughter Betty Grace was born
• William (age 54) died in January 1961 in Texas
