Officer Harold Hamilton, a plain clothes investigator working as part of the anti-burglary force, was preparing to eat his brown-bag lunch in the car with his partner, Patrolman Jeffrey Brosch, at 11:30 a.m. on 19 October 1970. They were alerted on the radio that a robbery was in progress at the Seventh Avenue and Clement Street branch of Wells Fargo Bank. The bank was only one and one half blocks away; they immediately responded to the call. Patrolman Brosch detained a man running from the bank. As Harold Hamilton entered the bank he was met with a burst of gunfire; he fell with one bullet in the chest and another in the abdomen. Inspector Hamilton died at 1:10 P.M. on the heart-lung machine at San Francisco General Hospital. Upon hearing the shots, Officer Brosch immediately entered the bank and found himself face-to-face with the bandit who carried a .45 pistol in one hand and a paper bag in the other. "I saw the .45 and I fired once," said Brosch. The suspect fell with the bullet lodged in his neck, dropping both his .45 automatic and the paper bag containing six hundred dollars in currency, which he had taken at gunpoint from the teller. The gunman was paralyzed from the neck down until his death eighteen years later.<br />

On the day of Harold Hamilton's funeral the Weathermen, a group of lawless radicals, bombed the entrance of the church where the services were held. The bomb, buried beneath a bush near the entrance to St. Brendan's Church, contained a high explosive and a large quantity of nails for shrapnel. It exploded a few short moments before the grieving family entered the church. A greater tragedy was avoided only because the family had awaited the late arrival of the mayor before departing for the church. Had they entered the church at the time published in the local newspapers, greater loss of life would surely have occurred. Harold and Harriet had four children, all born in San Francisco.<br />
