Early life
Reuben was born in 1878 in the town of Sivenzian in the Russian Empire.. His parents were Nathan Rabinovich and Esther Schulman. (Note: Family oral tradition has it that Reuben and is brothers were born in Azerbaijan. Reuben's brother Eli's naturalization papers show he was born in "Sivenzian", which appears to be a match for Švenčionys (spelled Sventzion in Yiddish) in Lithuania.)

In the 1890s, Nathan moved to Vilnius, in present day Lithuania, for rabbinical studies. The exact timing and circumstances are fuzzy. According to one account, "Father Nathan sent Reuben to Vilna (present day Vilnius, Lithuania) for rabbinical studies as this was the cultural center of eastern Europe. Apparently Eli and another brother Moishe ended up there. It is not known if Nathan (a rabbi) ever resided there." Alternatively, "Reuben and brother Eli came to Vilna from Baku around 1895 (and maybe others including his widowed mother)."

Life in Vilna
In the span of several years, Reuben moved to Vilna, Nathan died, Reuben's mother and siblings joined him in Vilna (either coming with Reuben or following him soon thereafter), and Esther remaried Yehiel Beinush HaCohen, a rabbi from in or near Vilna. Yehiel had several children of his own, including Sarah Myrtle Caplan.

Some family stories suggest that Sarah and Reuben were forced to marry, even though Sarah had a boyfriend at the time. Sarah was extremely unhappy about this. Reuben and Sarah married in Vilna in 1898. A year later, in 1899, they had their first child, Nathan (Nussan). According to Nancy, "One thing we know is that Reuben’s father was also named Nathan (Nussan). In Jewish tradition, of course, children are named in honor of a dead relative. So certainly Reuben’s (natural) father was dead by then. Likewise, Reuben and Sarah's third child, Esther, was born in 1907; we can assume this means Reuben's mother, Esther, was the child's namesake and was dead by 1907.

Life in The United States
In 1905, Reuben immigrated to the US, without his wife or children. He arrived at the port of New York March 13, 1905. The ship's manifest lists him as 26 years old; a painter; Russian; Jewish; from Baku; and he lists a friend named Phil B. Kaplan, at 139 E. Houston St. in New York, NY. (Phil could have been a brother of Reubin's wife Sarah, whose maiden name was HaCohen?)

A year later, Sarah and their children immigrated. By 1910, we find Reuben and Sarah, in their early thirties, living in Chicago with their children. Reuben was a plumber.

By 1920, Reuben (age 40) and Sarah (age 43) live in Chicago with their children Nathan (age 21), Rose (age 14), Esther (age 12), Hyman (age 10), Bertha (age 8), Ben (age 5), Sam (age 3), and Alexander (age 4 months).

After raising eight kids together, Sarah and Reuben separated. Sarah's two daughters (Rose and Esther, neither of whom ever married) took Sarah to Washington, D.C., with them when they went there to find work. (Esther became extremely paranoid and had many cats.)

Jean's son Adolph Bernstein apparently made a big deal of telling his son Eugene Bernstein that they were both fourth children and the first son in their families. This corresponds to Lillian, whom we only know from Adolph Bernstein's Family Tree, in which she is listed as "deceased," presumably in infancy or childhood.
In later years, Adolph began to refer to himself as Avram (his grandfather's name), as Adolph was no longer acceptable. Adolph compiled a family tree (on paper) based on locating his father's Romanian relatives. His son Eugene Bernstein has this family tree today.

Story of Adolph and Sylvia Meeting
Adolph and his friend (?) had jars of fetuses which they were going to display at state fairs to make money during the depression. Their first stop was Minneapolis where Adolph stayed with sister (Reva Bernstein) and brother-in-law (Sam Lieberman) who had a sister named Jeanette R Lieberman, married to Ralph Henry Horwitz, who introduced Adolph to his younger sister Sylvia Horwitz at a shivah.

* Adolph's older sister is Reva Bernstein.
* Reva Bernstein married Sam Lieberman.
* Sam Lieberman's younger sister is Jeanette R Lieberman.
* Jeanette R Lieberman married Ralph Henry Horwitz.
* Ralph Henry Horwitz's youngest sister is Sylvia Horwitz.

After Sylvia and Adolph met, they courted for a while, and Adolph's friend Ted took off for California without him. Adolph wanted to get married, but Sylvia's parents refused to allow it. Why? Because she had one older sister who was not yet married. So they had to wait until Mildred got married until they could get engaged.

Overview
"Adolph Bernstein’s life portrays the rich and valued participation of Jewish individuals in post-World War II Elgin. Bernstein, a member of the YMCA’s Board of Directors, chaired the publicity efforts for a fundraising campaign that supported a new building. He managed Fin ‘n Feather Farm and its popular Milk Pail Restaurant while helping lead his synagogue, the Community Chest, the Association of Commerce, St. Joseph’s Hospital, the Elgin Association for the Crippled, the Fox Valley Mental Health Society and the Kiwanis Club. When Elgin faced its biggest political question in the 1950s - the form of city government - leaders on both sides were Adolph Bernstein and Ben Rifken, native Elginites and sons of immigrant Jews.

"The immigrant parents of Adolph Bernstein and Ben Rifken had found Elgin a good place to raise Americans. Many Jews settled in Elgin as families in a community of diversity with strong public schools and people who valued them. Their children engaged with other Elgin kids in scouting or sports at the YMCA. Elgin was a springboard into American life for such people as Irene Wirtschafter, Marshall Goldman and Bobby Rosengarden."

Role in Shaping Elgin's City Government
"In the fall of 1953, petitions were circulated calling for a referendum on the changeover. Elginites for City Manager, later known as Elginites for Council-Manager, was formed under the leadership of Attorney William W. Brady, Anita Connor, who was active in the League of Women Voters, and Adolph Bernstein. This group campaigned for a favorable vote. The incumbent mayor, Myron M. Lehman, then serving his fourth term, and his supporters opposed the change. They maintained that 'the American ideal of government means full-time representation, not part-time councils; government by the peoples' representative, not a one-man appointee...' ECM charged that 'We are driving an old car with gas pedals and no brakes.'

"On April 6, 1954, voters approved the plan by a relatively close margin, 5,905 to 5,105, and Elgin became the first commission-form city in Illinois to adopt the managerial option by referendum. The decision in this segmented industrial city was far less conclusive than in a residential, one-class suburb like Highland Park, where the council-manager plan was voted in by a margin of 3,754 to 81 in December of the same year."

Career
Adolph's father Jean had died around age 50, and Adolph was convinced he would as well. As a result, he retired around age 47 and planned to spend his few remaining years relaxing. After turning 51 or so, his wife Sylvia kicked him out of the home and told him to go get a job. He did so, starting a second career that spanned another 15 years or so.

August J. Vaughan [sic], a successful farmer and stock-raiser of Williamsburg township, Phelps County, was born in Sweden, February 8, 1854. He was reared on a farm and attended school for about seven years. He landed in New York City, after a somewhat stormy voyage, on August 3, 1868, and came west as far as Oneinda, Knox County, Ill., where he remained for 10 years, working out by the month on a farm.

Mr. Vaughan came to Phelps County, Nebr., in July 1878, homesteading the southeast quarter of Section 32. There was plenty of antelope and other wild game, but very few actual settlers in that locality then. Mr. Vaughan was a young man and came here with a very limited means, having only three horses and about $50 in money. He built a sod house and at once set about laying the foundation for his future home. He underwent all of the hardships of frontier life, was compelled to haul water three miles for his stock, being unable to have a well dug, and was subjected to many other inconveniences. He has worked hard, early and late, however, until the once wild and desolate prairie homestead has been transformed into a productive and beautiful farm.

Mr. Vaughan was married to Miss Matilda S. Peterson on December 31, 1877. She was born in Sweden in 1856 and came to America in 1868. This union has resulted in the birth of five children, namely -- Oscar, Ira (deceased), Alice, Eddie, and Carroll. Mr. Vaughan has 320 acres of improved land, all fenced and under a good state of cultivation. He is a progressive man and believes in keeping well-bred stock of all kinds. He has some as fine standard-bred Hambletonian horses as anyone would wish to see, and his Short-horn cattle and Poland-china hogs are among the best to be found in Phelps County. He is regarded as one of the most successful stock-raisers in the county, and his example is well worthy of emulation.

Both Mr. Vaughn and his estimable wife are members of the Christian Mission church. In politics he is a republican, and a man who stands high in the estimation of his fellow men.

(Note: This was published in 1890, at which point A.J. and Matilda did only have 5 children. Children 6-9 were born after this book, in the 1890s. -- Jim.lindstrom)
Ancestry.com has a list of ships that arrived at New York on Aug 3, 1868:
* Caledonia
* Carrie Douglass
* City of London
* Davis
* Holsatia
* Louisiana
* Rosalia
* Udola

Ancestry.com has passenger lists for most of these ships. The handwriting is extremely difficult to decipher, but none appears to match A.J. Several ships did include a lot of Swedish immigrants, though. Most/all passed through the UK, and none come directly from Scandanavia.
Account of A.J. Vaughn's Emmigration by Dean Randall Lindstrom
<blockquote><p>This is the story that my mother, Aline, and my uncle, Lee Vaughn, have told me about the origin of the Vaughn name taken by their grandpa, August J. Vaughn, sometime in the 1880's when he came from Illinois to Phelps County, Nebr.: At age, 18, my great grandfather, August Johnson came from Sweden in the early 1880's and worked for a few years for a Swedish farmer in Illinois with a last name of Vaughn. He appreciated the job opportunity in Illinois and admired his employer, Mr. Vaughn. August Johnson was later convinced by someone to move to Phelps County, Nebraska and homestead 160 acres about 2 miles south of the pioneer cemetery, which we now call Platte Valley Cemetery. Upon arriving in Phelps County and doing the homestead claim he discovered that the county had many families with the name of Johnson who were not related to him and made it confusing. (or maybe there was another reason or two) I have not examined the real estate title or homestead document at the Phelps County Clerk's office to see how the name is recorded, but, at some time during the 1880's when he first came to Phelps County, he assumed the name of A. J. Vaughn. His wife, 8 sons, and all of male offspring have used the Vaughn name ever since. A.J. and his wife, Matilda, and 4 of their sons, Togue, Fred, Ernest, and Carroll, are buried at the Platte Valley Cemetery. A.J. &amp; Matilda had 4 other sons and a daughter who were married were buried with their families in Holdrege &amp; Overton, Nebr. and near Akron, Colo. My grandfather, Edward P. and wife, Ethel A. are buried in Moses Hill Cemetery northwest of Holdrege where my parents are buried.</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p>Great grandpa homesteaded in northern Phelps county. [...] The land that he homesteaded is about 16 miles northwest of Holdrege in Westside Township with a legal description as follows: The Southeast quarter of Section 32, Township 8, Range 19 West of Principal Meridian, Phelps County, Nebraska. The county recorder's office doesn't have the old real estate deeds inserted on their computerized database, so I will have to go to Holdrege sometime and walk in the Phelps County Recorders Office and find the original or microfilmed recorded deed from United States of America to A.J. Vaughn, August J.Vaughn, August Johnson, or whatever name he used back in the 1880's when he first homesteaded it. The landowner now on that place is Ryan C.
<blockquote><p>I can remember when A. J. Vaughn raised registered Hereford cattle on the farm. My uncle Lee says that in the early 1900's A.J. Vaughn (his grandpa) sold high quality registered Hereford (red &amp; white) bulls and bred cows to other ranchers and producers at auction at the farmstead on an annual basis. My mother, Aline, when she was a young girl, used to help her grandparents by helping to cook meals at harvest time or on special occasions when they needed to feed extra farm workers. A.J. Vaughn and his wife, Matilda raised 8 sons and 1 daughter. Great Grandpa Vaughn loved his trotting horses and had a race track behind his horse barn where he trained the "trotting gait" to his horses. My uncle Lee says that he remembers the horses in training wore a harsh metal appliance on the horse shoulders and legs which would cause them to bleed until they learned the special gait to make them a trotter. Then they were used to race with a two wheel cart which had bicycle-like tires.</p></blockquote>

The 1870 Census for Geneseo City, IL contains an August Johnson. What makes this likely to be A.J. is that August is the right age, he's listed as a day laborer (could fit Dean's story of August working for a Vaughn), it's in the area where we know he married Matilda, and his father's immigration year is listed as 1868, which matches the immigration date for August, given in that biography (Aug 3, 1868).
Aline and George lived on Charlie's farm, which was adjacent to Gustaf Lindstrom's original homestead. See Locating Gustaf Lindstrom's Homestead for a comparison of locations.

According to Dean Randall Lindstrom, "My mother, Aline, said that she met my dad, George, at a Saturday night dance in Overton in 1933. They were married at Westmark Church parsonage on Feb. 14, 1934."
Traditions
Christmas Eve gatherings at the Lindstrom farm were traditional ethnic events with lots of family and food. Lutefisk, potato baloney and Christmas cookies made up the Swedish gastronomy of the evening meal. Lindstrom and Vaughn family members from all over were invited to share in the food, singing and gift opening.
Aline was a prolific seamstress. In 1965, she made marching band majorette costumes as gifts for granddaughters Shirley Jean Lindstrom and Cynthia Lee Lindstrom. Along with the Christmas Eve 1965 meal and family gathering, it was all memorable.
Excerpt from Nicholas Shaver Family by John Koning
Like that of his father-in-law, the history of Casper Booher and his family is a mystery before the mid-1780's. Casper was a witness on the indenture agreement when Nicholas bought his land in Shirley Twp. in 1785, and he also shows up on the Shirley Twp. tax lists starting in 1784. No earlier confirmed records for Casper have been found to this point. The family bible shows that Casper and Phoebe were married in 1778, but there is no indication where the marriage took place.

I do remember my Grandma and Grandpa Hoppe very well. They were both alive until I was in Jr. High (grandpa died) and High School (Grandma died) ( or around then). The were a big part of my life. Went there for most holidays (except for Memorial Day was ALWAYS the Linn side) and they came to see us quite often too. I went to stay a week every summer with them in Correctionville and loved it. (Caught frogs, played with the chickens, picked raspberries, stayed int their upstairs....and played with my cousin, Jane.) It was great fun! My Grandma was a wonderful seamstress and she helped sew a couple of dresses for Homecoming and proms. My Grandpa was quite a teaser.....always teasing and playing with us kids. They always went to Phoenix, Az every winter because my Grandpa had bad emphysema.
Georg Carl Volkert contributed land to the Cushing Cemetery. The April 27, 1911 edition of the Correctionville News writes:

<blockquote>
A suitable location for Cushing's new cemetery has at last been found. Last year the town council undertook the establishment of a burying ground and decided on a plot of ground on the Organ farm. Chas. Baldwin, the present owner, however, strenuously objected, and the deal fell through. For several years, our German citizens have been agitating a movement of this kind and finally took it into their own hands to provide Cushing with a suitable resting place for the dead. A number of influential members of the Lutheran church met here Saturday and selected a two-acre tract on the Volkert farm adjoining the Stewart place, three-fourth of a mile west of the Lutheran church on the Correctionville road. The owner, Carl Volkert, has already given his consent to deed the ground for consideration of $650.</blockquote>
Creation of the Cushing Cemetery
Georg Carl Volkert contributed land to the Cushing Cemetery. The April 27, 1911 edition of the Correctionville News writes:

<blockquote>
"Jacob Booher Linn was born March 16, 1839 in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania and reared on a farm until 1859, when he entered the Rainsburg Academy, Blair County, Pennsylvania. He remained there until President Lincoln issued his first call for troops, when he enlisted, April 23, 1861, for three years in the Eighth Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry. He served in the Peninsula campaign; in the seven days' fight before Richmond under General McClellan; was taken prison, June 27, 1862, and spent sixty days in Libby prison and on Belle Island. Unfit for duty when exchanged, he was sent to a hospital, but, impatient to be in active service, he took "French leave," and joined his regiment in time to be at the battle of Antietam. He was also at the battle of Fredericksburg, in 1863. He was honorably discharged at Spottsylvania Court House, and mustered out at Pittsburg, May 23, 1864.

Returning home in June, he soon after bought a farm, where he remained until 1874, when he moved with his family to near Shelby, Iowa, and bought 120 acres, which he improved. He left his farm in the hands his son, McKendree, in 1881, and moved to Hand County, South Dakota, where, taking up 480 acres, he remained four years. He then placed Dakota lands in the hands of his sons, Ambrose and McKendree, who now own 800 acres and control about 3000 acres more as a ranch. Returning to Shelby, he remained there until his decease, in 1893, which occurred suddenly. He had gone to Blair, Nebraska, to a reunion with two of his old army messmates. Each had read a paper on his army experiences and observations, and when done knelt in prayer before parting. He began to pray, saying 'We thank Thee, O Lord, that we as comrades have been permitted to meet again. We pray Thee to help us to live that we may all meet in heaven.' As he finished the last sentence, he fell back into the arms of his messmates, gasped twice, and his spirit took its flight." p526-25, The Clan Linn in the Twentieth Century, taken from The Clan Linn.
1915 Shelby County History Book Entry
"Jacob Linn, was born in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, March 16, 1839. He is a son of James, a soldier of the war of 1812, and Nancy Hooker Lynn. He received his education in the public schools of Pennsylvania, and was attending college in order to gain an education that would be sufficient for a profession, when the war broke out. In answer to Lincoln's call, he enlisted, April 23, 1861, in the Eighth Pennsylvania Reserves, Company F, he served three years in the same regiment. He was under fire at Gainesville and took an active part in the second battle fought on the Potomac, and in the seven days' fight on the Peninsula; he was taken prisoner June 27, 1861, and sent to Libby Prison; he spent sixty days here and at Belle Isle, experiencing all the horrors of these terrible prisons. After his discharge he was unfit for duty and was sent to the United States hospital in New Jersey, but he took French leave and joined his regiment at Sharpsburg, Maryland. He took an active part at Sharpsburg, Antietam, battle of Fredericksburg under General Burnside, the battle of the Wilderness and in the seven days' battle before Richmond. He was honorably discharged at Spotsylvania Court-House, and mustered out of the service at Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, May 23, 1864, as Sergeant.

He was married October 7, 1864, to Hester Ann Chilcote, of Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, a daughter of Alva and Catharine (Booker) Chilcote. Mr. and Mrs. Linn have seven children, six sons and one daughter -- Ambrose B., McKindre, Anna Laura (a successful teacher), Monroe, Walter M. C., Franklin, and Hugh L."

Ninth Child
The north side of Jacob's tombstone indicates Jacob and Hester had a ninth child: born May 12, 1878; died May 16, 1878. This seems impossible, however, given, Hugh Harrison's birth only six months later.

(Note: Based on the details above, it may be possible to determine the ship that A.J. took from Sweden to New York... -- Jim.lindstrom)
In an email, Dean Randall Lindstrom writes:
There is no house or farm buildings on the farm now. and, it is used only for farmland for corn and soybeans.</p></blockquote>
